Poetry East #44: ABC
ABC or Ammons, Bukowksi, and Corman is a tremendous collection of poetry published when the Editor’s son was born. The poems reflect youth, and the love a father has for his son.
Enjoy works by legends A.R. Ammons, Charles Bukowksi, and Cid Corman as well as poems and musings from Zen Master Seung Sahn.
Ten Questions for the Zen Master
Poetry East: Why does a Zen Master write poems?
Seung Sahn: For you! They are written, with no intention, for all of my students.
PE: To manifest Zen mind?
SS: Zen mind, poetry mind, writing mind, practicing mind—are all not different
PE: How do you make a poem?
SS: Only whatever appears—write that down. It’s very simple. What do you see now? What do you hear now? Just become clear. This is not special: in writing poetry I see clear, hear clear, smell clear, and think clear. My thinking is clear, not checking anything—just thinking clearly. So: to make a poem, just think clearly and then make a poem.
